These samples are provided in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) so that you can view or print them at the highest quality your computer and printer can handle. (File formats such as GIF or JPEG would require the images to be unreasonably large in order to show the detail I'd like you to see.) To view PDF files, you need a free software program called Adobe Reader.
Some people in my department at Adobe Systems, Inc. were relocated to one corner of the building, but others also in my department remained scattered across other parts of the floor. To ease our transition into the new space, I created a map that showed where everyone sat, what our phone numbers were, and the locations and network names or phone numbers of printers and fax machines. Our facilities team provided the building blueprint in Adobe Illustrator format, but the rest of the work is mine, including the letter-number location identifiers. (For security reasons, all the names and numbers have been altered from within Adobe Acrobat, so some of the text columns no longer line up perfectly.) This document enabled us and our visitors to remain productive even during a chaotic reorganization. I redesigned an organization chart for my team at Adobe. The sample shown here labelled BEFORE is not my work; it is provided to clarify the marked difference my work can make. I realized that an org chart could communicate much more than just names in a structure, so my design labelled AFTER includes simple descriptions of each team's purpose, e-mail addresses to send mail to all members of a team, and each person's job title. The box called "See others at Brian's level" would be a hyperlink to the intranet where other teams' org charts could be found. All e-mail addresses on the page would also be hyperlinks opening the user's default mail application. One could further enhance the chart with more links. For example, clicking on a name could go to a web page showing that person's photo, telephone number, e-mail address, and other contact information. As with the map above, all names have been changed to protect the confidentiality of my former co-workers. Skills used: graphic design, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, Visio, Adobe PageMaker |
I created a program, postcards, and poster for a stage production of Ever Since Irma LaDouce, a performance-play written and directed by Laurie Thomas and performed by Susan Finque. In this sample, notice all the care taken with typography: the use of accent marks, such as an umlaut; the use of a proper ellipsis rather than 3 periods; the precise kerning of the letters in the title; the appropriate and effective uses for italics, boldface, and small caps; the horizontal and vertical centering and balancing of the cast of characters and the credits.
